This Bob Vylan meltdown is typical and expected. And very enjoyable. The fact they caught the BBC off guard is too good! They very cleverly used the chance when the media/government was focusing on Kneecap to speak out.
The disingenuous arguments against them, though, are so frustrating.
First of all, Bob Vylan are a punk duo. They are meant to piss off the establishment! Stop with the pearl-clutching!
Secondly, the front man was explicitly referring to the sadistic, genocidal Israeli army; nothing anti-Semitic about it. An army that films themselves destroying Palestinian homes and parading around in the undergarments of Palestinian women (among other vile videos). An army that duel citizens go out of their way to fight in. As with all criticisms of Israel, it has nothing to do with ethnicity or religion. But everything to do with humans and how low they can go.
While one could argue that Israeli born soldiers are victims of intensive brain washing, and I’d agree, there are other Israelis who have refused to serve and endured jail time. Being in the army is celebrated, these people are not innocent. It’s telling that the media/politicians express meager sympathy for the Palestinians (the victims of this army), but are deeply upset about the IDF (the oppressors) feeling threatened by stage chants.
I don’t condone murder or incitement to violence. It’s a slippery slope from rebel/victim to tyrant if a cause promotes and excuses violence against others. I believe all life is sacred. The western media/politicians would have you believe they also hold these kinds of beliefs, but imagine if the BBC had accidentally televised a band chanting death to Hamas. Would there be western outrage? Not a hope. Why? Are they not people too? Is Islamophobia not something to be concerned about? The same can be said if a band had shouted death to Nazis. Yet the actions of some Israeli soldiers are akin to Nazi atrocities, if not worse, and I’m sure that comparison will be a huge topic of research and discussion for years and years to come.
So, double standards it is. The West has dehumanized certain people; they barely batted an eyelid when the Israeli Maccabi supporters chanted death to Arabs in Amsterdam. Those supporters are surely either current or former Israeli soldiers. In fact, some of them likely have murdered Palestinians. They meant what they chanted!
Generally, I’ve always interpreted the “death to…” chant as symbolic of ending something, e.g., the end of a terrible and destructive organization. The IDF is an organization that needs to be abolished. The media/political outrage over Bob Vylan is ridiculous and tactical, and unfortunately it works. I can’t blame all the comment section calls for them to be locked up on bots.
Divide and conquer!
A final point to consider. Politicians and the media are worked up about someone calling for the death of an organization, but not upset about said organization literally murdering people. Daily! Tens of thousands (or more)! Not just with bombs, sniper fire, starvation, rape, and torture, but now with a Squid Games-style tactic of shooting people as they approach aid sites. Aptly named by the Israelis as “Operation Salted Fish“ (Red Light-Green Light).
The good news is the sociopathic Zionists and craven governments and media, nonetheless, feel threatened by it; otherwise, there wouldn’t be such a strong reaction. Ignore comments about the youth of today jumping on the Pro Pal band wagon, and bet they couldn’t find Gaza on a map. One doesn’t need to be an expert on a people and place to oppose genocide. Also, it’s not just young people speaking up for Palestinians. It’s people of all ages. And it’s not a bandwagon effect. It’s a growing movement of awareness, compassion and connection.
